Depth of field experiment

I splurged on a new lens today. Okay, so it wasn't exactly a splurge - it is quite possibly the cheapest lens available and it was on sale. I now have a 50mm 1.8 to play with, and this is the first thing I did with it.

I meant to take more photos of the dogs today and then cleverly left it so late that I had to use the flash. The flash I don't know how to use. The flash I changed the settings on and am not quite sure what I did. That flash. Still took photos anyway on the grounds that it would be good for me. The dogs approve of any activity involving peanut butter so there were no complaints there.
