For a while now I've been wanting to get headshots of the dogs, process them similarly, and then get them up on the wall. I wanted individual photos but they needed to be cohesive and obviously go together.

I am not sure these are my final choices, but for now they'll do. I have them here as a set just so I can see how they work together - when we get them printed up they'll be individual and cropped differently.

And, bonus photo, here's another headshot I got of Caiman the other day. I love the flowers in the background.

I now have a way to use my flash off camera. I'm taking a lot of very bad photos while I figure out how to use it but the potential is awesome. This photo didn't sing to me until I converted it to black and white using this nifty technique from Cowbelly Pet Photography's blog. I added a tint back into the photo because I find brown dogs don't look quite right in straight B&W.

Reverse lens macro

Yesterday I tried out a technique called Reverse Lens Macro for the first time. I took a bunch of predictable photos of pansies and I took this. Not so predictable, and no longer the colours nature used. I like it anyway.

I'm putting this photo here as well as on my tracking blog because I like it enough to have it in two places. Rivet is learning article indication for tracking - here she is lying by a small plastic lid and resting her chin on it. She usually pokes it with her nose but I think this is cuter.

One of the photos from this session was overexposed almost to the point of blank whiteness. I really liked the ghostlike appearance of the flowers in that shot and tried to replicate what I liked in a less extreme way in this shot.

There is a group on Flickr called Bench Monday. On Mondays people upload photos of someone (usually themselves) standing on a bench (or any other object that could conceivably substitute). Usually but not always only feet and legs are visible. It sounds ridiculous, but I find it compelling. This was my second attempt.

Project 365: Day 2.

This year I am going to tackle a 365 project - I am going to take a photograph every day of 2010. I actually started taking photos on a daily basis in mid December, to get in the routine before it officially mattered if I missed a day. Good thing, because I did. Miss one, I mean, but just one.

Not going to post them all here. My goal is to pick up my camera every day, not necessarily to take a good photo every day, so I'm only going to be putting my favorites on this blog. For now I am putting them all up on Flickr (see the whole set) and on ShutterCal (see in a monthly calendar format).

Video from yesterday. Rivet missed two treats in the first few feet of this track, got off track, found and ate the two missed treats, and then found the track again. It doesn't look like much but I found it fascinating. Already she is learning to keep her head down and her nose going (I could hear it clearly but the video didn't pick it up).

Steve White HITT seminar

Spent the long weekend at a training seminar with Steve and Jen White learning about scent work and tracking. It was fascinating, if so much information that I'm surprised my brain didn't explode.

This little video of Rivet was taken near the end of the weekend. It kind of looks like she's just going along eating off the ground because at this stage that is more or less what is happening. If you look closely though you'll see her behaviour change when she's over the yellow grid. She's using her eyes to help find the treats here and she can't see them on the yellow paint.

See how the rate of her footsteps changes as she speeds ahead to the next place she thinks there is food? There were more treats on the yellow than there were on the plain squares in the grid but she misses many of them.

And yes, that is snow you see blowing around in the air.

Before, After, and Beyond

Beyond: pushed the processing past my comfort zone (desaturated stone wall, increased contrast in copper, some burning)

This is a copper window on the powder shed at Fort George in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. The powder shed is the only original building in the reconstructed fort. The building was carefully designed to minimize the risk of an explosion, including using non spark producing materials only and having a non flamable exterior. The window coverings and the roof had a marvellous patina.

The other morning I went off looking at the gorgeous colours that show up in early morning light. This field had the most delicate green striping and I couldn't resist it.

A little further along I stopped to take a photo of horse with outlined in sunlight. He promptly came over for a visit and got much too close for the photo I was imagining. We had a conversation instead and I took a bunch of photos like this one.

Late last night I hauled out my new toy again and took some more dog photos. I'm loving this flash! I'm trying to work in RAW too, and I really don't know what I'm doing, but I'm having fun.

The dogs killed a rope bone earlier, so there are bits everywhere. These first two photos are of Rivet. Isn't she pathetic?

And here is one of Caiman. He really just wanted me to go away and let him sleep.

I took the boys to drop in agility on Sunday. Kona's brain flew right out the window when we first got there but gradually returned. I was very impressed with him, actually, as far as the agility parts went. I think it has been almost 9 years since he saw agility equipment and he obviously remembered some of it. He knew the weaves needed in-out movement but skipped poles and missed the entrance, obviously remembered what to do in the chute, and enjoyed the dog walk (staying on to the very end!).

First day with the new flash

I treated myself to a new flash today. I got a Canon 430EX, which might be overkill for the camera I have now but will hopefully be useful for the next one(s) as well.

This was a quick test run. Straight out of the camera - no processing at all. I bounced the light off of the ceiling. The ambient light was too dim to read by but it wasn't completely dark.

I'm pretty happy!

Agility!

Caiman and I got to play at agility this morning - the first time in years. We had fun, and he did very well. When he was offlead he stayed with me and didn't get distracted by the other dogs and people. Rivet came along more or less for the ride, although I did get her out of the vehicle briefly.

A new drop-in just-for-fun agility group has started up right near where I live. I'm used to driving across the city to train my dogs, and this group meets less than 10 minutes from my house. Heaven!

It was a good weekend

This weekend all three of the beasts made me happy. I celebrated by buying a new leather leash and taking some photos of them.

My little Rivet got her second point on Saturday. Isn't she pretty?

Caiman hung out nicely in an xpen on Sunday afternoon. That might not seem too impressive to you if you didn't know Caiman when he was younger, but I was apprehensive about putting him in it at all, let alone walking away and leaving him there unsupervised. Turned out fine - he's a good dog!

Kona was absolutely the bestest of my beasties. He was in a rally-o sanction match on Friday. I had no expectations of anything, as he's been worked maybe once in the last year and had never been to this show site before. Kona does not handle strangeness well, and I find that either he is working his tail off or he has no focus at all.

He was a trouper. I made an error, had him sit on a finish where he shouldn't have sat (a little APTD/CKC sign confusion), and cost us 10 points. I thought I failed us, so that was good news. Kona's score - including my 10 point deduction - was 88. That's 88 out of 100. If I had done the right thing he would have gotten 98 and possibly a second place.

Unfortunately I couldn't take a decent photo of him to save my life yesterday. I got this... (nice tongue)

In the end this was about the best of the bunch. His eyes are open, really, but the sun was bright and he's squinting. Honest.

Today's experiments took place outside. The dogs were in their yard and I was up on the deck. The sun/shadow contrast was very high so most of the photos are either over or under exposed for a large portion of the area.

I would retake this first one if I was looking for a photo to keep. He's looking terribly handsome in the middle one. In the last he's looking a little goofy, but I thought it was interesting how the angle and our relative locations messed with his proportions (great big nose, ittty bitty butt).

Today didn't go as well as yesterday. Poor Caiman spent the day at the vet's, and by the time I picked him up we were both tired.

Taken in the van on the trip home. And no, we weren't moving. Exposed for his head which left the windows completely whited out. This would be a better shot if I had cleared the clutter off the seat behind him.

These next two are the same shot but one was taken with the flash and one with the available light. The colours are better with the flash. I tend to avoid it though, as I'm often close enough to the object that the flash overexposes it.

Next we have a prop. The kong changes size relative to him, depending on how I positioned myself. In the first photo the emphasis is on the dog, in the second it is on the toy.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Photo challenge, day one

Robin Sallie issued a challenge to spend five days photographing a single subject. I have chosen Caiman, although I may have to switch subjects midstream as he is going in to be neutered tomorrow. At least I have other brown dogs to substitute if necessary.

I took *mumble*mumble* photos this morning. Here are five that have had no processing at all:

I particularly like how the light hits the edge of his ear in the leg close-up.

In the last (actually the first one taken) I was trying out my camera's B&W setting. The angle in that photo elongates his legs. I took some sepia too, and one that pulled out just some browns in the photo but made the rest B&W, but they weren't worth saving. Fun though!

This one needed rotating - does that count as processing? Another B&W. Handsome boy! Goofy boy? Either, both, whatever...

I've actually done a little bit (emphasis on "little") of training recently but apparently my record button was broken.

Rivet: Mat

Today was day #2 of working with Rivet on shaping a Mat. The first time we got to the point where she knew to put her front feet on the mat. This time we started off with about a minute of mugging the treat bowl and barking at me but then she looked at the mat, the lightbulb went off, and she stepped onto it. Bingo!

I just had a bowl full of treats and was having a grand time c/ting her for 4 feet on the mat and flinging the treat (she pounces with both front feet sometimes - cute as anything) when I realized I was clicking for motion. We get what we reward, right? So I paused to see what would happen.

Oh my... She got on, she got off, she got on from the right, she got on from the left, she came right up to me and backed on... For a dog that's had maybe half a dozen shaping sessions she is very willing to try! Finally I clicked for 2 feet on when there might have been a moment of hesitation in her movement and then I c/ted about 6 times in place before I tossed the next treat.

We repeated that twice more and I quit. In a way we're back where we started but I'm pleased with the session.

Rivet: Crate

Counted out 10 treats, c/t for entering the crate, tossed treat into crate, waited for her to come out again on her own. I should have timed this as she caught on very quickly. This was the first time working on this with the clicker although she is crated daily and quite happy in there.

Caiman and Kona

Quick session of front with Caiman, rewarding Kona for staying on a mat. Didn't go too well but it was the first double session in a long time. Caiman offered a nose bop to my belly a number of times which cracked me up.

Believe it or not...

Rivet actually got trained yesterday. I took her to the new PetSmart at 17th and the Whitemud. It was very quiet there - New Years Day and all - which was perfect for little Miss Undersocialized. She did great! A couple of things needed to be watched carefully for a while, and there was a little bit of nervousness, but she also took treats the whole time and was interested and playful for most of it. She also wagged over to anyone who showed interest in her. I realize that a quiet day at PetSmart is not the same as a busy show building but I'm still pleased with how comfortable she was. We'll have to do this again on a busier day too.

Before we left I went into the training area and worked on Doggie Zen for a while. I don't think we've done this at all before but she caught on very quickly and was leaning backwards away from the treat to make me click by the time we were done.

While I could chose to be embarassed at how thoroughly I fell off the training wagon after starting this blog, I've done it too many times to do so. I've trained my dogs since February, if only sporatically, but I didn't record anything.

The newest beast arrives later today. Countdown has begun! She'll be landing at the airport in just over 4 hours. Since this journal exists, I hope to use it to record at least some of our adventures.
